Why this session matters

Project management continues to evolve as organizations adopt hybrid delivery models, artificial intelligence, and a stronger focus on value and outcomes.

In this PMI Lebanon Chapter Monthly Talk, Mr. Hisham H. Malaeb explored the evolution of the PMBOK® Guide from the Sixth Edition through the Seventh and into the Eighth Edition. The session went beyond identifying what changed, focusing on why PMI introduced these changes and what they mean for today's project professionals.

“Understanding why project management standards evolve is as important as understanding what changed.”

Mr. Hisham H. Malaeb, Portfolio and Program Manager
Session overview

Participants examined how PMI's guidance has evolved from a predominantly process-driven approach toward principles, outcomes, value delivery, and more adaptive ways of working.

The session highlighted:

  • The transition from PMBOK® Sixth to Seventh Edition.
  • The shift from processes toward principles, outcomes, and value.
  • Key concepts and refinements introduced in the Eighth Edition.
  • Practical differences across PMBOK® Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Editions.
  • Implications for project managers, PMOs, organizations, and certification candidates.
  • Practical ways to apply the latest guidance in real-world environments.

Drawing on extensive portfolio and program management experience across the MENA region, Mr. Hisham connected the evolution of the PMBOK® Guide to the realities of modern project delivery. His central message was that the Eighth Edition does not replace established project management knowledge; it builds on it and adapts it to today's increasingly hybrid and dynamic environment.

  • Effective project professionals combine proven fundamentals with flexible approaches that deliver measurable business value.
For PM professionals

Why it matters

The evolution of the PMBOK® Guide reflects the evolution of the profession itself. Project professionals are increasingly expected to connect execution with strategy, value, adaptability, and organizational outcomes, not simply deliver projects on time and within budget.
