On June 9, 2026, the Project Management Institute (PMI) introduced The Standard for Artificial Intelligence in Portfolio, Program, and Project Management, the world’s first ANSI-accredited global standard dedicated to the responsible use of AI across project-based work.

As organizations accelerate AI adoption, many face challenges around governance, accountability, ethics, and risk management. PMI’s new standard provides a practical, technology-agnostic framework that helps organizations move beyond AI experimentation toward structured, responsible, and value-driven implementation.

Designed for project professionals, PMO leaders, executives, and organizations managing AI-enabled initiatives, the standard introduces eight guiding principles, five performance domains, and practical guidance on governance, human oversight, legal and ethical considerations, and AI lifecycle management.

The Standard at a Glance: 8 guiding principles, the foundations for responsible and trustworthy AI adoption; 5 performance domains to integrate AI effectively across portfolio, program, and project work; human-in-the-loop decision making, keeping humans in control of critical decisions; governance and risk, responsible AI oversight that manages risk, ensures compliance, and enables trust; ethics and legal considerations, upholding ethical standards and legal obligations in AI use.
For PM professionals

Why it matters

AI is transforming project delivery, but success depends on responsible governance as much as technology. PMI’s new standard provides a common framework for adopting AI safely, ethically, and consistently while maintaining human accountability.
