Project Management Institute has released the Agile Practice Guide – Second Edition, updating its widely used, framework-neutral introduction to agile practices to reflect how practitioners work today. Since the first edition was published in 2017, team environments have shifted significantly with the rise of distributed workforces, generative AI integration, and product-thinking approaches.
The second edition organizes its updates into practice, social, and strategic changes. Practice updates introduce a delivery continuum replacing the binary hybrid label, modernize common terminology, and incorporate product management principles. Social updates establish psychological safety as a baseline requirement and expand sustainability and inclusive language. Strategic updates address the widespread adoption of scaling frameworks and introduce enterprise agility in organizational contexts.
The guide remains grounded in evidence from PMI and Agile Alliance member surveys and job task analyses. It continues to serve as a practical starting point for individuals and teams while offering expanded measurement guidance and connections to adjacent disciplines such as design thinking and Lean Startup.
PMI members receive complimentary access to the Agile Practice Guide – Second Edition, which is now available for download through PMI standards resources.
